Energy Team Leader - Safety, Engineering & Standards National Highways

Chris is a Chartered Civil Engineer who has been with National Highways and its predecessors Highways England and Highways Agency since 1999.  Prior to that he worked within the private sector for a consulting engineer (Howard Humphreys / Brown & Root Civil) gaining experience within their traffic, highways and Resident Engineer’s sections.

Chris’ Energy Team is responsible for the Energy Storage System project which is rolling-out up to 2MWh battery storage at some motorway service areas to support government’s 2023 high-powered electric vehicle charge-points vision.  In addition, Chris team is developing plans to generate 10% of National Highways corporate energy by 2030 using renewable generation on or near the strategic road network.

Chris has worked in several parts of the company and successes include:

  • Development and publication of Highways England’s Air Quality Strategy making clear the company’s activities to deliver clean air;
  • Collaborative working with Councils to implement Electric Van Centre of Excellences encouraging uptake of these zero-emission vehicles to contribute to cleaner air;
  • Delivering a national statutory removal contract leading to improved service for customers and significant cost savings;
  • Publication of new salt spread rates derived from sponsored research and which were thoroughly tested during winter 2009/10. The findings supported delivery of an effective winter service to road users whilst saving costs and reducing environmental damage and pressure on salt stocks.
